Austria Sets Team Mark With 19th World Cup Win

KITZBUEHEL, Austria (Jan. 25) -- Reigning Olympic slalom champion Thomas Stangassinger, trying to ignore the pressure from Austrian downhillers' weekend struggles, Sunday won the slalom concluding 58th Hahnenkamm Weekend.
His victory in 1:44.27 -- the 19th of the season, one more than Switzerland's mark set in 1987 -- was a bare .08 ahead of countryman Thomas Sykora with Norwegian Ole Kristian Furuseth in third place, at 1:44.42. No American reached the second run; Italy's alberto Tomba, looking for his 50th World Cup SL win, straddled a gate in the first run.
Stangassinger's performance also blunted some of the disappointment among Austrians, who watched their speed skiers fizzle in the two downhills of the weekend. Stangassinger conceded there was plenty of pressure to succeed but he tried to focus on his own race, not worry about the DHers troubles.
Kjetil Andre Aamodt of Norway won the weekend combined event, more than three seconds ahead of Austrian Werner Franz. Matt Grosjean (Aliso Viejo, CA) had hoped to compete in the combined but lost his chance Saturday when fog forced an early end to the 58th Hahnenkamm DH after 42 racers.
