Ghedina Wins 58th Hahnenkamm; Weather Whacks
Americans
KITZBUEHEL, Austria (Jan. 24)
-- Italian
Kristian Ghedina, who won the
season-opening
Birds of Prey downhill at Beaver
Creek, Colo.,
in early December, regained his
touch Saturday
to capture the 58th Hahnenkamm
downhill.
A sudden weather change bought
on fog, topping
the race after 42 skiers.
Ghedina, starting seventh, won
his ninth
World Cup DH in 2:05.49 with
Didier Cuche,
the surprise winner Friday in
a 2-run sprint
DH, runner-up in 2:05.63. The
top 10 skiers
all came from the first 16 starters;
only
one skier outside the first 30
starters --
Frenchman David Pretot, who finished
16th
after running 41st and was the
next-to-last
racer -- cracked the top 20.
Kyle Rasmussen (Angels Camp,
CA), starting
32nd, had the best U.S. result,
finishing
23rd in 2:07.99 with Chad Fleischer
(Vail,
CO), starting 36th, in 25th place.
Chris
Puckett (Boulder, CO), racing
34th, finished
30th with AJ Kitt (Boulder, CO)
31st, Tommy
Moe (Jackson, WY) 32nd and Jason
Rosener
(Breckenridge, CO) 36th. Matt
Grosjean (Aliso
Viejo, CA), looking to compete
in the weekend's
combined event after being fourth
in CO a
week ago in Wengen, Switzerland,
was one
of a half-dozen combined skiers
who didn't
get to start before fog closed
the course.
"I'm disappointed with the
race but
I'm not disappointed in their
effort. The
guys never had a chance,"
said Coach
Bill Egan. "The humidity
rolled in,
the fog rolled in and the snow
got heavy...and
nobody outside the first 15 or
20 did anything
except Pretot. They gave it everything
they
had but it was out of their hands." |
