Second Win a Row for Katja Seizinger
SkiNet Report by Patrick Lang
Germany's Katja Seizinger and
it's team are
on a roll. The reigning@Olympic
Champion
scored her second win in a row
this season
at Lake@Louise, Alberta, in
Canada, where
she dominated the first downhill
of the winter.
The 25-year-old speed specialist
beat by
36/100 her teammate Katrin Gutensohn
while
Austria's Renate Goteschl, the
1997 Downhill
World Cup champion, was third
at 57/100.
Two other Austrian finished behind
Goetschl
while Italy's Isolde Kostner
was sixth at
1.16 seconds. The best Swiss
finisher, Heidi
Zurbriggen was only ninth and
the best French,
Regine Cavagnoud was 14th.
It was a very disappointing day
for the strong
Russian team : none of them could
ski among
the top-20 while Slovenia's Spela
Bracun
had a great 15th place despite
her start
number 45. In the absence of
Picabo Street,
who is training hard to get back
in top shape
for the races at Val d'Isere
next week, the
best US skier was Kristen Clark
in 32nd position.
It's Seizinger's 30th success
on the World
Cup tour since she entered the
major ski
league in 1990, and her 13th
downhill victory.
She won on this same demanding
course at
Lake Louise a year ago. This
success moved
her up in the lead in the Overall
World Cup
ranking which is her main goal
this season,
along with a medal at the Olympics
in Nagano,
Japan.
For the moment, however, she
is content to
have won another World Cup event,
after placing
first in the super-G at Mammoth
Mountain,
CA, last week. "It's great
to have done
so well on this challenging course"
she said. "The snow was
really hard
and fast. I really enjoy competing
in North
America. I can concentrate very
well on the
races over her. This result in
downhill is
very important because I can't
focus on speed
during training, since I have
become an all
arounder. You need good skis
and good feeling
for the speed to do so well on
such a course."
Seizinger does not intend to
slack of after
her two victories or become over-confident.
"Now my goal is to be more
consistent
in the speed events than last
year, but don't
ask me about my chances for the
Overall World
Cup before next March. There
are still so
many races on the schedule. The
season is
only beginning now".
Another downhill and a super-G
race are planned
for the weekend at Lake Louise,
where the
weather has been gorgeous these
last days. |
