Australian Steggal surprise slalom winner

Unheralded Australian Zali Steggall turned the World Cup upside down Sunday, winning the women's slalom Sunday for her first World Cup victory in the closing race of this week's Alpine ski meeting.
In a spectacular finish that saw each of the last five skiers briefly hold first place, Steggall overcame Ylva Nowen of Sweden by 0.78 of a second and slalom specialist Claudia Riegler of New Zealand by 1.05 seconds.
Leading with a first-run time of 48.18 seconds, Steggall laid down a brilliant final run to win with a combined time of 1:36.30. Nowen clocked 1:37.08 with Riegler at 1:37.35.
Steggall entered this World Cup season ranked 65th, her best previous result a fourth-place finish in the Sestriere, Italy, slalom in 1996. Born in France, she moved to Australia at age 6 and has spent the past summer training with the German National Team.
It is the second consecutive year that a skier from Oceania has won the women's slalom in Park City, as Steggall succeeded four-time World Cup winner Riegler on the top podium spot and moves into the early lead in women's slalom standings.
American Kristina Koznick thrilled the home fans by skiing to a fourth-place finish in 1:37.75 and holding onto a podium spot until Steggall crossed the finish line.
The challenging Clementine Race Course continued to wreak havoc on the world's top racers as six of the final 30 skiers did not finish the second run. Most noteworthy victims during the final leg were Ingrid Salvenmoser of Austria and Leila Piccard of France.
