1999年、ラムザウ世界選手権のスプリント、荻原健司は３位、優勝したビーク（NOR）に「おめでとう、君は本当のキングだ！」と祝福した。そのビークは４月17日、もうこれ以上のモチベーションを維持できないと引退を声明した。２月、極寒のラハティ世界選手権でみた荻原健司は新鮮で「若いのをジワジワと追い上げる」複合という競技を心から楽しんでいた。
