It has also become an enjoyable recreational area. Skiing is very popular there in spite of the near by Alps. The ski area is on the slopes of the "Grosser Arber", the highest mountain in that area with its 1,456 meters. It's located 30 minutes from the town, in the middle of a deep forest of high pine trees. Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark won all three men's races which took place there in 1976 and 1978. Ten women's competitions also took place there from 1981 to 1997, all dominated by top champions who also won several World Cup and Olympic titles.
