Altenmarkt/Zauchensee (Salzburgerland) AUT

The province of Salzburg has become an important skiing region in the past
two decades and has produced even more World Cup winners than its neighbor,
Tyrol. Three of the five Austrian women who clinched the Overall World
Cup since 1969 grew up south of Salzburg: Annemarie Moser-Proell, Petra
Kronberger and Alexandra Meissnitzer, who won 10 Crystal globes all together.
Hermann Maier also lives there and one of the most successful ski companies,
Atomic, has its main factory just outside Altenmarkt, where the women's
circuit is returning in January 2000. The racing hill is located at the
end of a small dead-end valley at Zauchensee, a very well protected area
with great ski conditions. Several competitions have taken place since
the early 1990's on the challenging run which requires very aggressive
skiing.
Altenmarkt itself is a typical Austrian resort with good lodging facilities
and some fine restaurants serving excellent local specialties.
