Innsbruck /Patscherkofel (AUT), February 28th - 2003 -Katja Wirth achieved her career's best performance in a World Cup race today in Innsbruck where she ended 14th in the first Super-G race on the famous Patscherkofel course after starting in 34th position. She is the second Austrian women to become gwinStar of the Raceh this season but she aims for more in the coming days. Her goal is to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Lillehammer, Norway!

Katja is already 22, but she is racing her first full season on the World Cup circuit after a successful Europacup tour last winter. She won the Super-G Europa Cup standings and was 3rd in downhill. This winter, she competed in all the events, but she scored her best results in the speed events. The skier from Bezau, in the Vorarlberg region, was 19th in a Super-G last January in Cortina d'Ampezzo
She can now hope to qualify among the top-25 and take part at the Finals in Lillehammer in two weeks.
The young Austrian was delighted to be the gwinStar of the Raceh in Innsbruck in her first World Cup race since Cortina d'Ampezzo. gIt's a great way to mark my first top-15 finishh she said. gI have been working hard for this in the past weeks. I didn't compete in St Moritz but in the meantime, I achieved some strong performances on the Europa Cup circuit. I'm leading the downhill standings and I have a good chance to successfully defend my fixed start-position on the World Cup tourh.
gI'm a member of the gA-Teamh but you have to fight hard to compete on the World Cup tour if you're not part of the National Team. I have to stay among the top-30 in the Super-G start-list to remain in the gA-Teamh. This result boots my confidence and I aim for other good races this weekend. It will be difficult to qualify for Lillehammer but I'll try hard. It would be fun to be part of the Finalsh.

Katja needed some time to find her best rhythm after severely injuring her knee in 1997. She also took the time to finish her secondary studies in Stams before entering the Austrian Army. She is gcorporalh in her sport-group. She is the second member of the Wirth family to excel in the Austrian team. Her older brother Patrick, born in 1971, was an excellent Super-G specialist in the 1990s. He takes now care of Kjetil Aamodt skis on the World Cup tour!
