Lenzerheide (SUI) December 22nd - 2002 -17-year-old Resi Stiegler surprised herself and her coaches in today's slalom in Lenzerheide as she skied out of the No. 61 start slot and earned the first World Cup points of her career, finishing a stunning 11th in that race won by Janica Kostelic. She became the thirteenth gwinStar of the Raceh in this season-start.

Resi, who just turned 17 was only competing in her second World Cup in Switzerland. She was the first to be astonished to do so well in that last race prior the Christmas break. gI made a big mistake in the first run and I thought that was it, that I wouldn't get a second run!h she explained afterwards. g But when I got to the arrival and I saw that I was 20th, I was so psyched. It was great. You feel like a start at the bottom when you finish and everybody is cheering. It's quite fun! In the second run, I had nothing to lose so I just went out and skied my best. The conditions were difficult but it was fine for meh

This result may affect her program for the coming weeks. It was planned that she would mostly compete in Nor-Am or Europa Cup races to get more experience but now she may be qualified for the slaloms in January and - why not - for the World Championships in St Moritz. Only two other US skiers scored points so far in slalom, Sarah Schleper and Kristina Koznick!

gI'll see, for the moment I'm just happy to go back home because I have been long enough in Europe and I'm not used to it. I'll enjoy the break with my family now. Then we will see what's going onh.
The charming Resi, who decorated her helmet with put two stuffed rabbit ears comes from a famous family of Austrian skiers who moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in the early 1960's. Her father is Josef gPepih Stiegler, the 1960 slalom Olympic Champion from Innsbruck who runs this wonderful ski resort located in the Teton Mountains for almost forty years.

Stiegler is the second racers of the US women's team to be the gwinStar of the Raceh this season after Libby Ludlow in Lake Louise but one of the youngest. Only a few skiers have done so well with such a high start-number. This result will help her to improve her position in the FIS rankings but she may have more opportunities in a few weeks to go for another gwinStar of the Raceh Award. Last season, Canada's Genevieve Simard won it three times to become the gwinStar of the Seasonh at the Finals in Flachau!
