Like a shooting star flashing across the mountains sky, Petra Kronberger had a short but brilliant career from 1988 to 1992.
In that brief time, the sensitive and deeply religious athlete from south of Salzburg reached all the highest summits in alpine ski racing and set impressive records along the way.
A triple Overall World Cup winner from 1990 to 1992, Petra scored her first World Cup podium during the 1987/88 season and finished 6th in the Olympic downhill at Calgary that winter.
After a disappointing 1989 season marked by the domination of the Swiss team(22 victories out of 26 races) she made it to the top in 1989/90. Thanks to her six World Cup successes, she became the first champion to beat the strong Swiss team in the Overall World Cup standings since 1984.
It was also the first Overall victory for Austria since 1979( Annemarie Moser-Proell, a good friend of Petra). Kronberger increased her domination on the women's tour in 1991 becoming the only athlete in the modern era to win in all five alpine events during the same season.
She also won gold at the 1991 FIS World Championships at Saalbach.
Petra might have won more but injured her foot. 1992 brought her a third consecutive Overall World Cup title as well as two Olympic gold medals in slalom and combined at Meribel.
After a slow season start in 1992 , Kronberger quit the team and went home.
Petra had lost her motivation and was now scared of the high speeds of ski racing.
During her brief career, Kronberger had won 16 events in all specialties.
She was a great inspiration for a new generation of young Austrian champions including Alexandra Meissnitzer, who trained with her in 1992 before her rise to stardom.
