Christl Haas, one of Austria's most successful ski racers, suffered a heart attack whilst swimming in the sea at Manavgat in Turkey and drowned yesterday.
The 57 year old Tirolean from St. Johann was the domineering downhill skier of the Sixties. She was part of the triple Austrian triumph taking the Olympic title ahead of Edith Zimmermann and Traudl Hecher in Innsbruck in 1964. Four years later in Grenoble she came in behind champion Olga Pall and Isabelle Mir to take bronze. In addition, she won World Championship gold in 1962 and silver in 1964 in the Combined.
Haas travelled to Turkey on Friday with her daughter, son-in-law and three
grandchildren. The rough sea on the third day of their holiday proved to
be fatal. Her body will be transported to her home in the next few days.(FIS
