Did Kirsten Clark skip a step or two on the way to her first World Cup victory?
She bagged the first World Cup top-10 of her career during Winter e00 and as the
speed events opened last season grabbed a top-10 at Lake Louise.
And
after posting the fastest time in the combined eventfs downhill race at the
World Championships in St. Anton last February, "Clarky" captured her inaugural
World Cup triumph two weeks after the championships, taking a downhill in
Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
But shouldnft she have had a top-5, or maybe
even a top-3 before the victory? No problem for Clark, the no-nonsense racer
with the blue-collar work ethic. Her combined DH performance (she finished 10th
overall in combined) convinced her shefs ready to win World Cup races. Her
confidence - the one ingredient lacking - is at an alltime high. No more
self-doubt, she said ("Ifve got that win in my back pocket all the
time").
Comment: "The combined race showed me I could win. I mean, Ifve
always felt I could ski well with the best girls, but Ifm not sure I really
believed I could beat them. But when I ewonf that combined downhill, I started
thinking, eYfknow, you can win -- not just do well, but win!f And I do believe
it. I know I can beat the other girls."
Coachquote: "Clarkyfs such a hard
worker and really deserves all the success she gets. The only down side, I
guess, is shefs no longer a darkhorse. When Michaela Dorfmeister sticks around
to follow Clarky, whofs running 30th, in the downhill [at Worlds] to see if she
holds onto that gold medal, that tells me a lot. It tells me she knows Kirsten
is at that level now...that she can win." -- Jim Tracy
Start-up: On skis
at Sugarloaf when she was 3, she was racing by 7. A Junior Olympics national
champ in e94, she was Nor Am GS champ in e97 before starting to focus on speed
events. Her downhill win at the Chevy Truck U.S. Alpine Championships in Montana
last March made her the first skier, male or female, to win four consecutive
national DH titles.
