"winStar of the Race" in Val d'Isere's SG
Val d'Isere, December 13th - 2002 - A week after her colleague Tamara Mueller in Lake Louise, Fraenzi Aufdenblatten also became the “winStar of the Race” in Val d'Isere's Super-G in finishing 5th , her best result ever in a World Cup speed event, after staring in 45th position .

The 21-year-old racer from Zermatt was the best Swiss skier in this competition. The Swiss is considered as one of the greatest talents in her team after clinching two gold medals in downhill and GS in past Junior Ski World Championships. She qualified for today's race because her team was given another spot for this weekend after Tamara's strong performance in Canada. Fraenzi only raced once before in a World Cup Super-G - here a year ago. She finished it in 49th place.
The young and outgoing Swiss didn't expect much more this time because she usually doesn't feel so comfortable in speed events. For the moment, she mostly competes in giant slalom - she was already once 5th in a GS, last season at Are, Sweden. This qualified her for the 2002 Olympics but she didn't manage to end the race in Utah!
This time, she only lost half a second on the winner, France's Carole Montillet as she beat experts as Italy's Karen Putzer, 7th this time. “This is a great and wonderful surprise for me because I didn't expect to ski as fast today” she said after her race. “This was a nice week here for me - I already finished 15th yesterday in the GS. It gives me great momentum for the coming months”.
Daughter of a ski instructor in Zermatt, Fraenzi Aufdenblatten managed to successfully end her secondary school at the Ski Gymnasium in Engelberg where she achieved her Federal Degree (Matura). It's only her second full season on the World Cup Tour.
