Ingemar Stenmark has been called the most impressive technical skier in the history of the World Cup with his 86 wins (40 GS, 46 SL), and record-setting performances from 1974 to 1989. A triple Overall World Cup champion from 1976 to 1978, he also clinched ten GS & SL World Cup trophies in his prime.

Ingemar also finished 2nd or 3rd ten times in the Overall standings. A five-time gold medal winner from 1978 to 1982, he remained unbeaten in giant slalom during two years from March 1978 to February 1980, winning a total of 15 competitions in that specialty. that included the Olympic gold medal at Lake Placid, New York.

Stenmark only raced a World Cup downhill only once, in January 1981, at Kitzbuhel, while shooting for points in the combined. In fact, he came 3rd in that "paper race" won by his rival Phil Mahre after finishing well back in the downhill.

During his entire career, he used Elan skis produced in the western part of Slovenia. A little- known fact is - in his first few seasons on the World Cup tour, he raced in GS with slalom skis. He left the World Cup circuit in March 1989 setting the fastest time in his last GS run at the finals in Nagano. He competed until he was 33.

Ingemar's daughter Nathalie, born in 1984, is now a promising player in Nick Bollitieri's tennis camp in Florida. Stenmark is still traveling around the globe to promote various companies he has endorsed.
