Karl Schranz, the first Austrian to clinch the Overall World Cup trophy in 1970 and 1971, is one of the most intriguing racers in the history of the sport. His ski racing career lasted over fifteen years. The impressive number of victories and his personality made him a very popular athlete all around the world. Karli was racing on wooden skis in 1957 when he won his first major race, the Arlberg Kandahar downhill in Chamonix. He continued to win in metal skis in the early 1960's and finished near the top of skiing on his newer fiberglass Kneissl skis in 1972.
Schranz won 20 prestigious downhill races, three gold medals at FIS World Championships and two Crystal World Cups. A very tough athlete who liked to train by himself, Karl competed with legendary stars such as Toni Sailer, Anderl Molterer, Guy Perillat, Jean Claude Killy, Gustavo Thoeni or Bernhard Russi. While a courageous downhiller, Schranz also dominated the technical events. He was 31 when he won the GS title in Val Gardena in 1970. At 33, he celebrated an impressive double victory on the demanding Hahnenkamm downhill course at Kitzbuhel. Unfortunately, the I.O.C. ruled him a professional for taking sponsor money, and kicked him out of the Winter Games in Japan. Yet, over half a million of Austrians welcomed him at home in Vienna. Married and father of two daughters, Schranz runs his own hotel in St Anton . He is also one of the Directors of the Organizing Committee of the 2001 FIS World Championships there.
