| Nobody expected Paul Accola to become the third Swiss skier to clinch the
Overall World Cup title in 1992. It was a season marked by fierce duels
against the great Alberto Tomba. A solid slalom specialist, he had four
top-3 places in that event in the past. He also won two Olympic bronze
medal in combined -- in 1988 at Calgary and in 1989 at Vail. then surprisingly,
"Pauli" took off in that 1991-92 season. He won three Super-G
races, a GS and a slalom as well as three combined on his way to beat Tomba
and Marc Girardelli, the defending World Cup champion from 1985, 1986,
1989 and 1991. Born and raised in Davos, where his family has farmed for
generations, Accola is a very complex and controversial person who doesn't
usually let people get to close to him. He often fights with his coaches
and suppliers which hurts his concentration before races. Accola suffered
several injuries in the years following his triumph of 1992 but he never
gave up the hope for a come back. Then in 1999, the Swiss veteran surprised
the world again by winning another bronze medal in combined at the FIS
Championships at Vail. He finished his dream comeback at the Swiss National
Championships in spring 1999 by grabbing medals in all events. Accola's
other passion beside ski racing is to work with heavy machinery for construction.
Pauli has built a very solid ski career so far. |
